PHOTOS: 30 Groundbreaking Sci-Fi Films Given the low $27.5 million domestic bow and 12 percent Rotten Tomatoes score, top executives at several rival studios estimate that if the film doesn’t score big overseas, it could lose tens of millions. Sony insiders put the loss at about $20 million but rivals, not surprisingly, are guessing much higher. That puts a lot of pressure on the rest of Sony’s summer, including Roland Emmerich’s White House Down, Grown Ups 2, the comedy This Is the End, Smurfs 2 and Matt Damon’s Elysium. So who suffers most from the fallout? Competitors and talent representatives concur that faltering director M. Night Shyamalan will take the biggest hit, but Smith — who conceived the project, produced it with wife Jada Pinkett Smith and cast son Jaden Smith as its co-star — has the most to lose. Insiders agree that Smith’s bulletproof image could be dinged by several factors: PHOTOS:Hollywood Dynasties: Top 14 Movies Featuring Stars and Their Kids Lack of Focus:A source who has worked with the CAA-repped Smith — arguably the world’s most bankable star — says he has been less attuned to his movie career recently. Nearly four years passed between Seven Pounds and last summer’s Men in Black 3. “One thing you’ve got to do as an actor is portfolio management,” says this person. “Will went through a place where he didn’t do a lot of movies, and none has been great.” The bottom line: “He could still be highly successful, but it was automatic before. Now audiences will look more carefully.” Off-Message Media: Smith, 44, and his 14-year-old son gave a joint interview to New York magazine that one prominent producer describes as “a jaw-dropper.” Will Smith described himself as “a student of patterns,” adding, “At heart, I’m a physicist.” Even as the elder Smith described how visitors to his household would be surprised to find that it is “simple and basic,” Jaden declared: “I like Cartier,” noting “before that, it was Louis” (as in, Vuitton). And that type of coverage leads to Less Fresh Prince and More Royal Prince: This began with buzz about Smith’s behavior (and his gigantic trailer) during the making of MiB3. Says a prominent film exec who has worked with Smith: “That aw-shucks, incredibly charming, self-effacing spirit doesn’t seem to play anymore. You can see it on talk shows. He’s got that energy and positive attitude, but it doesn’t have the same contagious quality.” Another Smith associate believes such behavior takes a creative toll.
And young Jaden Smith seemed especially inspired on Friday as he broke into a wildly enthused gallop outside popular West Hollywood eatery, Urth Cafe. The 15-year-old actor – who has been romantically linked to Kylie Jenner – plastered on an animated face, put his head down and bolted past the cameras with an unmistakably cheeky grin. Action man: Jaden Smith put on a running show outside Urth Cafe in Los Angeles on Tuesday, showing onlookers what his legs are made of Jaden was looking particularly stylish in a black tank and black leather shorts, and added his own personal flair with a pair of patterned socks pulled up as high as they could go. The energetic teen wore fashionably round sunglasses which he perched on the tip of his nose as he gallivanted past the popular healthy cafe. It seems Jaden spent part of the day checking out Sandra Bullock and George Clooney’s latest flick – Gravity – and apparently he seriously dug it. Look at me! The 15-year-old son of Will Smith had a little fun with the shutterbugs Up and away: The teen found himself airborne as he whizzed down the sunny sidewalk ‘Gravity Is On Par With Avatar,’ the After Earth star declared to his 4.5 million followers. Afterwards, Jaden stated that he felt he ought to withdraw from the social media platform on account of the human consciousness being unprepared for him. ‘I Should Just Stop Tweeting, The Human Consciousness Must Raise Before I Speak My Juvenile Philosophy,’ he said. Following in his footsteps: Jaden appeared to have a shadow in a pink shirt Going for it: The young actor had no need for his stylish round sunglasses as he careered through the wind in a fashion-forward ensemble The young son of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith is certainly developing a determined and opinionated mind, and he has a hefty platform on which to speak it thanks to his famous parents and now his own fully fledged movie career. Though he can’t even drive yet, his dating life also seems to be progressing, as he’s currently linked to model and reality star Kylie Jenner.

Yet unlike “Bad Boys” or “Men in Black,” in which Smith was the star, the franchise was designed to ensure the ascent of Jaden Smith, not Will. It’s just one of the projects the rapper-turned-movie-star has developed for his children with actress Jada Pinkett Smith and her brother Caleeb Pinkett through his Overbrook Entertainment production company. According to an individual familiar with the planning of the movie, “After Earth” was envisioned as a trilogy. By the time a third installment arrives in theaters, “Will will be too old to be an action star and Jaden will be just entering his prime,” the individual told TheWrap . Almost every element of the movie’s website, from its trailer to its explanation of this futuristic world, begins with Jaden. The marketing campaign for the M. Night Shyamalan directed movie bears a striking similarity to earlier campaigns for Will Smith movies. In 2008, Will Smith appeared in two movies, “Seven Pounds” and Hancock,” that grossed a combined $792 million. Both of their posters consisted of nothing more than Smith’s mug, his name and the movie’s title. His visage, inscrutable yet familiar, distant yet desirable, was all it took to bring fans to the theater. They show him flying through the air with this futuristic wing suit and people forget that is the same kid who was in ‘Pursuit of Happyness.'” Yet if Jaden is the focus of “After Earth,” Will is the supportive parent literally. It is the second films in which he plays Jaden’s father and the third he has produced, the third being none other than the hit “Karate Kid” remake starring Jaden. “Overbook exists for the greater glory of Will and Jaden,” one individual with knowledge of the company told TheWrap.
